Ride sharing is the activity in which people share transportation for mutual benefit. Ride sharing may or may not involve financial compensation.


The act of ride sharing involves at least two parties. One is the driver, who is providing the vehicle and is also driving it, and the other is the rider, who is traveling as a passenger.


The people participating in ride sharing may or may not know one another but are connected by a mutual decide to share transportation.


Ride sharing has occurred since the advent of transportation and has been far more common in the past than it is today.


Public transportation is an evolution of ride sharing, where the driver is a state or city agency and the riders are the general public.
